FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the relaunch and cactus care.
The relaunch
Are you selling plants right now?
Not yet. The store is closed while we grow the next generation of seedlings. We expect to reopen in about a year, and the Takara family list will hear about it first.
Why did Takara Cactus close?
We stepped back to focus on our careers and our relationships. It was the right decision for our family, and now we're ready to come back to the garden, and to all of you.
When will the store reopen?
We're aiming for about a year from now. Join the Takara family list and we'll share updates as the seedlings grow, plus first access when the first release goes live.
Will past crosses come back?
We're sourcing seed for some of the favorites you loved, alongside new hybrids we're excited to share. Family list members will see the lineup before anything is released.
I still have a plant from you. Can I share it?
We would love that. Email a photo to takaracactus@gmail.com or tag us on Instagram. Nothing makes us happier than seeing where our seedlings ended up.
Plant care
How should I get my cutting to root?
Let the cut end dry in a shaded, airy spot until it has formed a hard callus — usually one to three weeks depending on thickness. Then stand it upright on dry, fast-draining gritty mix. Hold off on water until you see or feel roots (often two to four weeks), then begin watering lightly. Warmth and bright, indirect light speed things up.
How should I plant my seedling?
Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix — roughly half pumice or perlite — in a pot with a drainage hole, only a little larger than the root ball. Plant at the same depth it was growing, wait a few days before the first watering so any disturbed roots can heal, and introduce it to full sun gradually to avoid sunburn.
How often should I water my cactus?
Water deeply, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. In the warm growing season that's often every one to two weeks, depending on heat, sun and pot size. In winter, cut back to a light drink every month or so, or none at all if it's kept cool and dormant.
